Recently I’ve been doing a lot of reading, partly because I think I sleep better when I read before bed rather than look at a screen. These four are books I’ve been reading in the last week or two. It looks a lot, but two were very quick reads. I picked out the three on the left to read as they were on the Booker Prize Longlist and I thought I should try some more serious fiction for a change. It’s been a real mixed bag. Frankissstein was really strange a combination of stories about Mary Shelley the author of Frankenstein and more modern stories about Artificial Intelligence – I think they were supposed to be linked by theme. Whilst it wasn’t difficult to read, it was a bit arty and I’m not sure what the point of it all was. My Sister The Serial Killer was a lot more fun and it was a quick read: short, quite big type and a great story. I’d recommend that one. 10 Minutes 38 Seconds in This Strange World is the one I’m currently reading. I think in terms of meaning, it will be the most powerful and it might well lead me on to read more by the same author. It’s a surprisingly easy read for difficult subject matter about sexual abuse and the role of women in society in Turkey. I’m slipping through it quite quickly and I suspect this is because it’s very well written. The book on the right is a bit more lightweight, in a good way. I’ve read all of Elly Griffiths’ Ruth Galloway crime novels, but The Zig Zag Girl is from another series of hers. I enjoyed this one and I’ve requested the next one from the library.
I went to an event in Birmingham City Centre this week for the launch of the ENVY facial at DermoPerfection. I’m going to try it out myself next week and I’m looking forward to it. I was really impressed by the demo we saw, but slightly nervous about how much dirt and gunk might come out of my skin when I do it (they collect it in a little jar so you can see it). Will have to let you know how I get on next week.
I’ve been getting into the Christmas mood a bit more this year. To be honest the last few years, for various reasons, my heart hasn’t been in it and I’ve only made an effort for H’s sake. This year we have put up more decorations and I’ve bought a real tree, rather than the usual artificial one. I am hosting a big family Christmas meal this year and I want the house to look nice for it. Along the way I’ve been taking pictures for the Coop Christmas food project I’ve been doing on my other blog. This week it was party food. It is starting to feel a lot like Christmas. Work is starting to slow down I think as it’s been a busy couple of weeks and I’m looking forward to taking some time off over Christmas.
