Two weeks in one this week as I was away last weekend. Both weeks have passed in a bit of a blur because there has been a lot going on. On Thursday I had my 50th birthday so there were a lot of celebrations connected to that, but to complicate things further H has a school residential to go on.
I had to buy a lot of things for H’s residential, but we escaped having to get some things because H currently has about the same foot size as me. So the ‘old trainers’ he took coasteering were from me. H doesn’t really have old shoes, he just has shoes that fit and shoes he’s outgrown. He was able to borrow my walking boots too as they were pretty neutral too. Another time we’ll have to buy new stuff for him, but for now we got away with it. I did splash out on a sleeping bag and a mat though, but was a bit frustrated that the sleeping mat didn’t come with instructions and H didn’t manage to inflate it while he was away, although I’ve since got it to work.
I got H all ready for his trip and then set off for a birthday treat trip to Wales. I’d always fancied stopping at an hotel called the Penhelig Arms in a little place called Penhelig, which is on the edge of the town of Aberdyfi. As you can see it’s a handsome building and a beautiful spot to spend a few days. I visit Cardigan Bay quite regularly and this time I visited some old places and some new. Barmouth is a regular haunt, but I also visited a characterful old church in Llwyngwril.
It’s a beautiful medieval church, but I was surprised to see a swift in the church building. It seemed injured, but it did manage to find its way up to a high perching point after I’d taken this photo, so I just had to leave it in the church.
A lovely weekend then back to reality. On Wednesday I had to pick H up after his school residential. I’d been scouring the school twitter and instagram feeds for a picture of him. I spotted him twice and in the second picture he looked a bit grumpy. He came back hungry and exhausted, but I haven’t been able to get much out of him about the trip. I’m not sure it was a great success as it sounded quite full on with lots of climbing and other outdoor activities and he’s not really that sort of boy.
It’s been an odd sort of week because my birthday was actually on the Thursday, so there were some extra celebrations then. Also, with H away at his residential it’s been quieter too. I’m planning to celebrate with friends at the weekend and I’ve been working hard on the planning for that. Hopefully I have enough food in for everyone that is coming along.
