H started secondary today. I was that strange combination of proud of my big boy; wistful about him growing up fast; and slightly stressed about one or two things that weren’t very clear in the information we’d been given.
Luckily the first morning all went to plan. What worked for us was having plenty of time. We were up by about 6.10, but didn’t need to leave until 8.00-8.05, so there was no need to hurry. H got a good breakfast inside him – he needs to wake up a bit first and usually eats his breakfast in stages (I’m not sure how this will adapt to the teenage years). Everything was ready the night before really: uniform laid out (I’d labelled it all over the last week or two) and bag packed. I’m not sure that will be the case every morning, but I’m going to encourage getting the bag ready the night before.
One of the questions that I didn’t know the answer to was around needing a PE kit. I assumed not for the first day as it hadn’t been mentioned, but I am a bit concerned that he might need it tomorrow. This wouldn’t be a problem, but he’s going home to his Dad’s tonight, then from there to school in the morning and the PE kit is here. The other thing is around Parent Pay. There was something about setting it up in the first week of term in terms of the ‘biometrics’ (I think they use a finger print) and I checked the Parent Pay site – they say the school needs to give you a logon. I’m assuming as I haven’t been sent a logon that the school will be letting them eat on credit the first day, but they haven’t said that specifically. I can’t send money because it’s a cashless school and he can’t leave the premises at lunchtime either. I’ve sent him with a Wacko bar, just in case. I’m not sure that will take much of an edge off real hunger though, but I didn’t want to send a full packed lunch either.
I think with hindsight it is worth asking what they need to bring on their first day and what the arrangements are for paying for lunch. I wish I’d thought of that at the welcome meeting or the induction day.#
Update: He had a good day. As for lunch that was provided on credit which we’ve now had to pay for because the logon has been provided. As for the PE kit it was typical that he did need it on Friday, so I had to drop it round. The up side was that I did get to see him after his big day even if it was very briefly.
