I think we all think of car insurance as an annual thing. I certainly do and whilst that’s fine a lot of the time, it can be a bit inflexible. How often have you thought, if only soandso was on my insurance it would make life so much simpler. Of course, you can add them on, but there’s often extra fees for doing so or limits on how often you can make changes. It can soon seem like an expensive and inconvenient process. The alternative is to fall back on third party insurance to drive any car that a lot of us have built into our annual policies, but that’s quite a risk to take.
One way around this dilemma is to arrange hourly car insurance and there are quite a few benefits to doing so, especially when unforeseen situations arise where you might need coverage for a shorter duration. For instance, imagine you’re planning a spontaneous road trip with a friend and need immediate coverage. In such cases, having access to trusted personal injury lawyers can provide an added layer of security, ensuring you’re covered for any unexpected mishaps along the way. This level of flexibility is invaluable, offering peace of mind without the hassle of committing to long-term policies or facing hefty fees for temporary adjustments.
- You can protect your no claims discount. Adding on a temporary driver could impact on your car insurance premiums for years to come, if they have an accident whilst driving your car. No claims discounts can be worth up to 70% off your car insurance premium, so it’s potentially quite a risk to take. Even if the accident isn’t your additional driver’s fault, it could take take a while to establish that, so perhaps you’d be better off saving yourself the stress and hassle in the first place.
- I’ve tried adding additional drivers onto my insurance in the past and it isn’t always straightforward. To be honest some providers are better than others, but sometimes it will cost you a lot of money because you have to insure a driver for the rest of the year or a longer period of time than you need like a minimum of a month. Some will charge you an administration fee every time you make a change too. The idea of keeping my main car insurance separate to any temporary extra needs is really very appealing.
- It’s often very quick and easy to set up a temporary policy either online, via an app or on the phone. Your policy can then be emailed to you, so you have your proof of cover immediately to hand. I love the idea of being able to organise insurance that quickly.
- You only pay for what you need with hourly car insurance. If you just want to cover the holiday period when your child is home from university, that’s easy to do. If you are borrowing a family member’s car for a week say whilst yours is in the garage or you are looking to buy another, you can get a policy for that. If you just want to be able to share the driving with a travel companion on a one off road trip, you can just get a policy that covers that too. That level of flexibility is so useful and makes things so much easier. I can remember a few trips when it would have been so helpful to be able to get temporary car insurance cover.
