We got sent the Music Star Pack from Tech Will Save Us to review over the summer holidays. It was great for H to have something different to build over the school break and it gives an extra sense of achievement when you are building something that will actually work. The Music Star Pack includes the two music kits from Tech Will Save Us in one pack: a Synth Kit to create music and a Speaker Kit to amplify the sound.
The first thing to point out is that you need to provide a 9 volt battery (the sort you use in smoke alarms usually) and a soldering iron. Now we did have a battery available, but not a soldering iron. That said, we didn’t have to look that far as my parents had one. If you don’t want to buy one and don’t already have one, I’d suggest asking either someone older if they have one (I can remember Dad repairing things with his in the past, so I knew he had one) or you could try someone who has a relevant hobby or job (mechanics, those who are interested in electronics or jewellery making for instance).
Then you follow the simple online instructions to make the Synth Kit. They are quite straightforward to follow. Then you use the soldering iron to attach the Speaker Kit’s electronic components to the Printed Circuit Board, then solder the exciter to the Printed Circuit Board. Add your 9v battery and battery pack to the Circuit Board and test, then solder in place and start playing music on your speaker.
It’s a fun kit of budding engineers and music makers alike and it’s recommended for 10-12 year olds, which I think is about right as H is 11. If you’d like to win a set yourself, enter via the Gleam widget below.
