Self-confidence issues are always common after giving birth. Indeed, a lot of women suffering from postnatal depression will have problems with their confidence. There’s no scooting around the fact that carrying and giving birth to a child will alter your body. It’s simply a natural way of life, and it will happen to all women that give birth.
Sadly, most of the self-confidence issues stem from problems relating to your weight and physical appearance. Some of the typical things women worry about after birth is that they’ve gained too much weight, they have lots of excess skin, there are deep stretch marks and so on.
Naturally, you are probably feeling conscious of these things right now. You recently had a baby and you are struggling to feel good about yourself. It’s a horrible position to be in as it feels like you’re blaming your baby for this, despite the fact that they are the best thing to ever happen to you! It’s no wonder that you can slip into a deep mental health crisis after giving birth!
So, what can you do to feel self-confident again after having a baby? Before we get into a few of the tips, the main thing to know is that it’s a different journey for everyone. Some people may find that only one thing on this list helps, while others do them all and they all work. Or, you might discover that nothing you’ve read helps. That’s okay, at least you have figured out what doesn’t work for you – which can go a long way to discovering the root cause of your self-confidence problems. As such, don’t assume that all of these tips will work for you, but feel free to give them a try:
Don’t compare yourself to the past
The worst thing you can do is compare yourself to how you used to look. A lot of mums do this when they give birth, looking at photos of them in their early twenties. Of course you looked different back then; you had no responsibilities, more time on your hands to exercise and you hadn’t given birth! Acknowledge that giving birth will change parts of your body, and that’s totally okay. Once you stop looking back at what used to be, it’s much easier to focus on who you are now – and to love the skin you’re in.
Additionally, applying a body firming cream for cellulite regularly can also improve your skin health, which in turn, can help boost your confidence.
Get a new wardrobe
Many mums find that getting an entirely new wardrobe of clothes is very beneficial for their mental health. This sounds like an excuse to go shopping, but it’s true! Again, it’s the whole looking back on the past thing. Your old clothes might not fit, making you feel bad. If you get new ones, you can wear things that fit properly and look damn good on you! You’ll feel more confident when you actually wear things that look good, rather than having reminders of how much slimmer you were before getting pregnant.
Stay active
You always see this advice for mums that have recently given birth. However, it’s usually posed from the angle that you need to exercise religiously to lose all of your baby weight. This isn’t always the best message to get across as it implies that you need to lose weight after giving birth. Only lose weight if you feel that it’s damaging you mentally. For some, the simple act of exercising is a good mental release that helps them feel more confident. It’s like you know you are doing something good and positive, so it makes you feel more positive about yourself. You don’t need to lose weight or change your appearance; just exercise to feel good!
Do a photoshoot
Photoshoots are always excellent ways of feeling more self-confident. Ironically, you’d think that getting your photo taken is the last thing you’d want to do if you feel bad about your appearance. However, there are loads of photoshoots that help you feel so good about yourself because of the way the images are taken. One good idea is to have a baby photoshoot and include some photos of you and the baby. It’s a brilliant way of seeing yourself in a different light; you’re a mother now, and you have a beautiful baby that you’ll love forever.
Ultimately, feeling confident after having a baby is all about recognising what makes you feel bad and knowing why you feel this way. Do you hate your appearance because YOU don’t like how you look, or because society tells you you need to look a certain way? Once you understand this, it’s a lot easier to start building your confidence back up.
