Good pelvic floor muscles are such an important part of our health and well being. It’s miserable if you have to wear incontinence pads or worry about leaks when you exercise, cough or even laugh. Exercising those key muscles has proved difficult for me over the years. I’ve tried all sorts of things, but none have been entirely satisfactory. Stopping at traffic lights was supposed to be a prompt to do some exercises, but I kept forgetting. I’ve tried electronic pads and internal devices, but there is a certain amount of faff and you need to set aside time at home to do it. I’ve long thought there must be a better solution.
Dermoperfection recently offered me the chance to try out a treatment course of EMSTELLA at Dermoperfection’s medical skin and cosmetic clinic in the Mailbox, Birmingham. EMSELLA is a breakthrough treatment for incontinence and it’s completely non-invasive. It utilises electromagnetic energy to deliver thousands of supramaximal pelvic floor muscle contractions in a single session. Studies have shown that 95% of patients report an improvement in their quality of life, and 75% pad reduction after EMSELLA.
What does a treatment course for EMSELLA involve?
I was really keen to try it out. One of the things that most appealed is that you just sit on a special chair, you’re fully clothed and it’s very easy. Basically I sat on a chair for 6 sessions of 30 minutes a time and read my book. It was that simple.
You can get straight back on with your day afterwards. There’s no downtime and no muscle aches afterwards.
How does it feel?
It’s painless, but you will feel the vibrations created by the chair. It’s difficult to describe the sensation, but it’s a sort of tingling feeling. You can pick the level of intensity you are comfortable with and your first session will probably be on a lower level than your last. I started lower, but my last couple of sessions were on full strength.
Can everyone use EMSELLA?
Men and women can both use EMSELLA, which is great to know. However, metal implants are an issue and you should seek advice before starting a course if you have any.
What are the benefits of EMSELLA?
A half hour session exercises your pelvic floor muscles to a much higher degree than you could hope to achieve on your own. So it’s concentrated and focused exercise. Within a day or two I noticed a feeling of greater tightness and security in that area. By the time I’d had a couple of sessions I was noticing not only that sense of greater muscle strength around bladder control, but experiencing sexual wellness benefits too. It’s great to notice almost immediate benefits and it does help motivate you to finish the course.
For many women it’s a game changer: other patients at Dermoperfection found it to be life changing. To get that control back over your body is a wonderful, empowering feeling.
Would I use EMSELLA again?
Absolutely, it made a real difference to me. In any case, it’s desirable to have top up sessions afterwards to keep up the good work.
About Dermoperfection
Dermoperfection are based in the Mailbox Birmingham. They are a friendly, approachable, but very professional clinic. As they are a medical skin and cosmetic clinic, they are able to deliver treatments at the cutting edge of skin and bodycare.
Update: September 2023 – I’ve now been for a maintenance session to help consolidate and continue the good work done in the original course. It’s so easy to go and sit on a chair for half an hour and the results are still good – everything feels much more secure down there!
Disclosure: I was given a course of EMSELLA for the purposes of this review.

At last, a non-intrusive solution to help with bladder control.
sounds good
