Fairly recently I told you about H’s move up to lessons in a bigger pool with his swim school. Swimming lessons have been going really well since he moved up. He is now being stretched more and is having to swim 25m lengths, with about half the pool being out of his depth. H mentioned the other week that the teacher had said they could have a go at their 200m swimming badge soon when all the class was there. H was very much up for it.
They got to the pool and the teacher talked them through everything that was required. H set off and started plodding through his 8 lengths. I must admit I was a bit doubtful. He doesn’t look that strong a swimmer in the water. Things got better when he switched from swimming on his front to his back. His back crawl is better than his front and back stroke has some advantages for distance swimming because you can breathe more easily. Once he got to his sixth length and was swimming as well as he had at the start, I was sure he would make it. He did! There was a little cheer and a clap from our section of mums (and a dad). H getting the award seemed to spur on his class mates because I think they had felt it would be too difficult, but when they saw H getting close they decided to have another go themselves.
He’s a very happy boy and is now looking forward to working towards his 400 metres badge. He’s also keen to do his swimming badge with cubs which should be coming up soon.
