H has been a strong reader for some time and more than capable of reading chapter books. He’s had a bit of a blind spot with them though and hasn’t wanted to attempt to read them. We tried various things, like reading some to him at bedtime. He just wasn’t keen. He was happy to listen to us reading them, but he had little interest in reading them for himself.
So the other week we went to the library and I suggested getting out a range of books, including one of the Astrosaurs Academy series. One day after school I suggested he read this book. He sat down and read it in one session. I’ve now been instructed to order the rest of the series out of the library. We have suddenly burst through the chapter book barrier and have a little bookworm on our hands. He very much reminds me of me, when I was his age, when I used to devour books. I’m so pleased that we have finally persuaded him to give chapter books a try, as he clearly gets a lot of pleasure out of reading.
