That first Scalextric set is something of a rite of passage for boyhood I think. I can remember my brothers and the boys at school excitedly talking about the joys and excitement of racing their cars around scalextric sets. We have been trying out the ‘My First Scalextric‘ set from Hornby which is targeted at 3+, so allowing younger children to enjoy the fun too. As you can imagine H was desperate to get his hands on this.
The set is really easy to set up and you can be racing within minutes, which is great given the younger audience that it’s aimed at. I also liked the fact that it plugs in for power rather than needing to search around for batteries. The cars are quite big and chunky compared to the traditional scalextric cars, so they are easier for smaller children to handle. The whole set has been designed with its younger audience in mind, so the controllers are also easy to use and colour coded with the cars – very simple. H found them very easy to use.
If you look on Amazon, you will find some negative reviews in amongst the mostly positive ones: at the time of writing it had a 3 and a half star rating in terms of feedback. We did experience some problems with the first set we received as the car braids (small metal brushes on the underside) did wear out very quickly. There are spare sets in the box (as they will need changing from time to time) and we did get a replacement set and we didn’t experience the same issue with that. As this set is made by Hornby it is covered by a six month guarantee, which gives a reassurance of quality. The set is very robust and the track doesn’t come apart too easily. We didn’t experience the traditional car flying off problem that I remember from my childhood. This is a great present for any child that loves the idea of racing cars.
