H has been going to the same swimming lessons for 9 years now. We started off with him at 7 weeks old and the special school pool that the swim school used was perfect for little babies because the water was so warm. We carried on going even when the swimming school changed hands and he has enjoyed every minute of it. H is not a natural sportsman, but swimming has always been the sport he’s enjoyed most and has been best at. It’s very important for him when we go on holiday that there is a pool available and he loves to swim every day then. We did have a little swimming hiccup when he started school swimming lessons and it seemed like the school were undoing all the effort that had gone in over several years, but we are past that now and all is good.
For a while now the special school pool has been looking a little bit small for H and his friends. So it was decided that H and his two friends would move up to classes at a different venue (a posh private school) with a 25m pool, but with the same swim school. They all moved at the same time and are with the same teacher as before. The only thing that is different now is the pool. It’s much bigger and they can’t touch the bottom for much of the length of it, which is good for them. There are a few other changes too and I was interested to see how H got on with them. At the old pool I could go into the changing rooms with H, but at the new venue I can’t because there are older boys using the changing rooms at the same time. H gets himself ready for school swimming on his own, so I was hoping this would work ok. Then there was the fact that the pool wants you to wear a swimming hat (this was a new one on us), so we had to deal with that for the first time too. H went off on his own and I went into the pool to the spectators’ area. I was quite surprised when he quickly reappeared all changed, ready to go and even had his hat on. I hadn’t expected it to go that smoothly. He got showered and dressed again quickly afterwards and even managed to put his wet things away away from the dry.
H had been told quite a lot about the new venue by his classmate who is in the class ahead of him, so H was quite prepared for all that came. I’m hoping that he can improve his strength and stamina in the pool over the coming weeks as I think he is ready to move his swimming up a gear.
