If you are based in or around Stevenage, it’s only a short hop along on the train to Welwyn Garden City and there’s plenty here to see and do. If you take a train travelling from Stevenage to Welwyn Garden City, you’ll arrive at your destination more relaxed and ready to get out and explore. There’s a lot to see in the area and I’ve picked out my favourites here.
Explore The Garden City
Welwyn Garden City was founded by Sir Ebenezer Howard in 1920. He’d previously designed Letchworth Garden City and he was one of those calling for the creation of planned towns that were to combine the benefits of the city and the countryside and to avoid the disadvantages of both. At the heart of the town was a neo-Georgian town centre with tree lined boulevards leading out from it. There’s plenty of greenery as every road has a wide grass verge. You can see the older houses on the west side of Parkway to get an idea of Howard’s vision.
The New Maynard Gallery
Take in a little culture in the shape of the New Maynard Gallery. Within the foyer of the Hawthorne Theatre at Campus West, Welwyn Garden City is the gallery space of the New Maynard Gallery. This is a non-profit making charitable trust exhibiting both professional and amateur artists from across Hertfordshire. The displays change regularly so there’s always something new to see. It’s a great way to see some local art and get a feel for the local community spirit.
Stanborough Park, a beautiful countryside park, covering an area of 126 acres. There’s plenty to see and do here because there’s a cafe, a boating lake with rowing boats and pedalos, a model boating lake, parkland, nature trails and an adventure playground area to enjoy. You can just enjoy a walk or get more active as you prefer.
Gosling Sports Park
Whilst we are on the topic of being active, if you have a sporty inclination, you’ll enjoy Gosling Sports Park. There’s something for all the family too as there’s soft play and trampolining for the kids as well as all the normal gym facilities plus a health suite with a spa pool. Add to this the appeal of a dry ski slope, the outdoor velodrome, a golf driving range and a six lane track for athletics, you can certainly enjoy a wide range of sporting activities here in Welwyn Garden City.
Campus West has a wide range of activities to offer and there should be something for every taste. You can go to the independent three-screen cinema, which shows the latest blockbusters as well as independent films, plus there are event cinema screenings of live theatre, opera and ballet. RollerCity is the only purpose-built roller rink in Hertfordshire which hosts skate sessions, parties and fitness classes. It’s the perfect place to meet up with friends and have a little fun. There’s a soft play centre too, which will be appreciated by young families.
