Science lessons are amongst H’s favourite lessons at school. So I knew this DK book would be interesting to him and I knew that it would be visually appealing because books from DK Books always are.
Filled with fun questions and 37 hands-on projects, How to be a Scientist by Steve Mould has been written to inspire young minds to think like a scientist. How to be a Scientist is a fun-packed book covering core Key Stage 2 topics including the Natural World, Human Body, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space, so it will support school work too. The emphasis is on fun though with experiments like the jelly one where you cover various fruits (including pineapple) with jelly and see which ones don’t set. The pineapple one won’t set because of the bromelains in the pineapple, who knew?
Other topic spreads explore subjects including the water cycle, the Solar System and the different parts of the human body, with engaging illustrations and bite-size facts. There are loads of projects children can try at home and each one is beautifully illustrated with step-by-step instructions to guide children through every stage, and each project uses materials that can be found at home or easily sourced (always a blessing to parents – I think the most difficult one to source might be epsom salts, although we do have some in the house, but you can get these at the chemists).
At the end of every experiment, readers are encouraged to continue testing what they have learnt in new and interesting ways. The scientific principles behind each project are clearly explained, with colourful illustrations and real-life examples reinforcing the knowledge learnt with each experiment. There’s also a chance to learn about history’s greatest scientists, their important discoveries and what made them such brilliant scientists in the first place, from Charles Darwin and Marie Curie to Albert Einstein and Galileo.
This book has been a popular addition to H’s science library and he’s enjoyed reading it and trying out some of the experiments.
