This stone in Bedwellty churchyard commemorates my ancestors: Richard Hughes, Margaret Hughes and Enoch Hughes. Enoch was a traditional name in our family and my grandfather and great-grandfather were both called Enoch. The Enoch on this stone is an earlier one. The stone got an unusual verse on it, which reads:
You that are young prepare to die
For I was young and here I lie
My marriage bed lies in the dust
Christ is my spouse in whom I trust
Bedwellty was the existing parish church in the area before Tredegar got its own parish church as it developed, so the official business of life, like births, marriages and deaths were recorded in this church. As far as we know my family never actually lived in Bedwellty and they made Tredegar their home. It’s a lovely old churchyard and feels very villagey, whereas Tredegar has a Victorian town feel to it.
