We’ve been to Chi Kitchen, in Debenhams Birmingham, a few times now and have always enjoyed their take on modern Asian cuisine. This time they invited us back to try out their Asian Afternoon Tea menu. They are offering an Asian Afternoon Tea for £16.95 and a Prosecco Asian Afternoon Tea for £19.95 per person. We had the prosecco version and had a nice glass of prosecco as well as a pot of Jasmine Green Tea to complement our meal.
Our first tier was a Chicken & Chinese Mushroom Fried Wonton, a Prawn Dumpling, a Prawn & Chive Dumpling and Chicken & Prawn Siu Mai Dumpling. Served with this course was a range of dipping sauces including sweet chilli and soy sauces. These delicate little bundles were packed with flavour and made a lovely alternative to the usual sandwiches of an afternoon tea.
The middle tier consisted of Malaysian Curry Puff, Chicken Bun, Vegetable Spring Roll and Chicken Satay. The Chicken Satay was very moist and tasty kebab with a mild satay flavour. The Vegetable Spring Roll was just the right balance of crunch and softness. I was less keen on the Chicken Bun as I found the bun bit a little bland, although the filling was tasty and flavoursome. The Malaysian Curry Puff had a mild curry flavour and there was plenty of moist filling to balance out the puff pastry outer.
The final tier is where the sweet things were. This differed slightly from the menu in that there was a deep, dark, chocolate pudding instead of the Banana Cake. As well as the chocolate pudding, we were served a Pandan Panna Cotta, Green Tea Cheesecake and Coconut Pancake Roll. I was less keen on the panna cotta than my husband, so I swapped him mine for his coconut rolls. I don’t very often get to eat coconut as both R and H aren’t keen, so it was a welcome treat. I really enjoyed these and I had no problem demolishing both mine and R’s. We were all agreed on the Green Tea Cheesecake, which was very nice with its subtle green tea flavour.
As always the service at Chi Kitchen was prompt and friendly. It is quickly becoming one of our favourite restaurants with its inventive fusion cuisine.
Now that’s what I call a fabulous afternoon tea

I had never thought of an Asian afternoon tea but it looks lovely and would make a nice change especially as I don’t really eat bread.
