As you know H is a real bookworm, so the prospect of new books is always an exciting one. Miles Kelly sent us one of their gift sets this Christmas and H got to open it at the weekend. We had the 9-11 years set (H is 9 in March), so that seemed best for a fluent reader. Inside there were 3 exciting books, all very much the sort of thing H likes.
- The Science Book – A perfect choice for H at the moment as he is science mad. He’s currently attending a school science club where they do all sorts of exciting things like heart dissections and the science behind party poppers. This is a wide-ranging science book with lots of illustrations and information. Sections include: Incredible Science, Body Science, Wild Science and Extreme Universe.
- Adventure Stories – Classic adventure stories never lose their appeal and this book features some of the best from over the years. There’s a short Sherlock Holmes story: The Adventure of the Speckled Band, which I think is a good one to start off a love of Holmes. Longer books like Lorna Doone and Oliver Twist are featured in extracts. I’d like to think that in some cases children would be inspired to go on and read the whole book. Some of the stories H has already encountered in abridged form like Treasure Island, but reading an extract from that book is a good next step.
- Mini Classic Jungle Book – By coincidence H has been reading this at school. He’d previously read a shortened version that had been adapted for children. This is the full version of the book. It’s a reasonably challenging read, but very achievable. We have read some bits together. There are lovely illustrations too and some notes about the author and the content of the book.
Overall I think this sort of gift set is ideal if you are buying for a child that you don’t know the interests of that well for instance or if you are just short on time. Miles Kelly have quite an extensive range of book gift sets, so you should be able to pick one out for whatever child you are buying for.
