We are planning a picnic for the summer. My sister is coming back from Australia after 5 years and for the first time in so long we can all be together. There are more of us now too: I’ve never met my 4-year-old niece and none of my sister’s family have met my brother’s children or my other sister’s youngest. We are a big family too: I am one of five and all but one of us has children. My mother has 11 grandchildren. It’s difficult to fit us all in anywhere really. A month or two ago we went out to a country pub for a meal and then to a park to play, but that was with a smaller group than we will be when the Ozzies arrive. So me and H have been thinking about a picnic.
Our picnic needs to be on quite a scale because of the numbers involved, so we have been plotting and we did a bit of a dress rehearsal the other day. Our idea was to turn our lawn into a patchwork of picnic blankets. Luckily we have quite a few and we can borrow more. It made the lawn look so colourful and pretty. A little bunting cheers things up too and makes for a party atmosphere.
Higgidy asked us to try out some of their new products at our Higgidy picnic and we were happy to oblige. We tried out their little quiches: Little Peperonata & Feta Quiche and Little Ham Hock & Petit Pois Quiche. We already knew we loved their Smoked Bacon & Cheddar Quiche, but these new products have added a little variety to the selection available. When you are hosting lots of people you want to provide something for every taste. The Little Ham Hock & Petit Pois Quiche is big on traditional British flavour with seeded shortcrust pastry filled with slow cooked smoked ham hock & petit pois in a free range egg custard, topped with a turmeric & mustard crumb. Meanwhile there’s the best of Mediterranean flavours with the Little Peperonata & Feta Quiche with its Seeded shortcrust pastry filled with sweet CherryBell® peppers in a free range egg custard, hand topped with roasted red peppers and crumbled feta.
I was pleased to see that there were some smaller treats for the children like sausage rolls and these tasty Veggie Rolls which are delicious with feta, crushed chickpeas, red peppers & chia seeds wrapped in buttery puff pastry, topped with a crunchy tomato crumb. One part of the family is very nearly vegetarian and my sister-in-law is a vegetarian, so it’s useful to have some tasty treats that they can all eat. I think our Higgidy picnic will be quite a success.
