H first started at cubs about 2 years ago. He joined the same pack as some friends of his and whilst it isn’t the most convenient location, it has enabled him to see these friends regularly. A few months after he joined he made his promise and then about a year ago he was promoted to seconder. He was chuffed to bits then and obviously since then he’s set his sights on becoming a sixer.
We knew there was a chance of a job coming up. Some of the existing sixers were moving up, but I worried that as there didn’t seem to be a huge number of cubs in the pack, that they might drop the number of sixes. They had had 4 sixes, but it was difficult to see that there were enough children to justify that (it was getting to the stage when it would be all management and no normal cubs!). Also, H is not far off moving to scouts, so that was another issue. Would they still see it as worthwhile to promote him given he would soon be moving on?
In the end it was all good. Yes they did drop down to 3 sixes, but H got a sixer position. Yes he’ll only be in it till the end of the summer I think, but he’s very proud of himself. They do seem to give the positions out to the children who behave the best generally, so it is pleasing to see him rewarded. He’s really pleased too that one of his best friends will be his seconder.
