Last weekend my brother was up and he, my mum and I went off on a family history odyssey. I live in Birmingham, on the west side, and I obviously spend time there and the city centre. Quite often I venture a bit to the north or the south, but I very rarely cross the city and visit places on the east of the city. That side of the city is where much of my mother’s family lived though and we went to visit my mother’s cousin who still lives that way. Later we went to see the house where my great-grandparents lived for years and my mother spent much of her school holidays when she was growing up. We did get a few funny looks on the road as we were taking pictures of the house.
We also went to visit the site of my great-grandfather’s fruit and potato shop in Long Acre, Nechells (also in Birmingham). The shop and the building have long since gone and we think the site is now some sort of office or factory block . This picture isn’t one of mine obviously, but it shows my great-grandmother Gertrude Hunt with her daughter (my great-aunt Winifred). I can remember Auntie Winnie visiting us occasionally when I was a child.
On Monday I tried out an interesting new restaurant that had opened in Birmingham: Tamatanga. Great food and good company too.
It’s been a busy week work wise and I’ve spent a lot of time on photography and blog posts. This picture was for the Lumie Bedbug.
And this one was for Go Go squeeZ.
It’s been an exceptionally busy week workwise which is good in many ways, but it just seemed very hard at the end of the week as it felt like it was all catching up with me a bit. My mum is ill, although in many ways you wouldn’t know it as she is carrying on as normal. There seem to be quite a few things to worry about at the moment one way and another.
Friday was a lovely day to begin with and I thought I was getting just the rest I needed with yoga, a coffee morning (with cake) and friends popping in for lunch as a staging post on a long journey. After school pick up though it went wrong. We have problems with the upstairs toilet and it got blocked again. H flushed it when it was still full of water, so it overflowed and started coming through the kitchen ceiling light fitting. After we’d mopped up the water and sorted out the toilet blockage – I can recommend this toilet plunger that we bought which seems to do the trick as we have used it a number of times now- I rang my brother to come check it over (he’s an electrician). He said he’d come over later and I might trip the RCD on the fuse board if I was unlucky. As we were about leave for swimming I did just that and the burglar alarm started going because power had been disconnected. Panic stations! Then a neighbour arrived to check on us because of the alarm. By the time everything was sorted out, we were running late for swimming, so more stress. My brother came round later to check things out and it looks like we have escaped damage to our fairly new kitchen ceiling and the light fitting still works too.
