H has just moved up to scouts and left cubs behind and it’s feeling a bit like the move from primary to secondary school. I think that’s partly because it’s September and the start of a new school year too, but there are quite a lot of similar features, not least that he has a new uniform. H has been one of the longer serving members of cubs for a while and had risen to the rank of sixer, so a bit like reaching Year 6 at primary school. Now he’s back as one of the youngest and has no rank at all: a bit like a Year 7 starting their new school.
The move to scouts has gone very smoothly. H has moved up with a friend and rejoined other friends there already, some former cubs that he got to know through that and one older boy that he is good friends with anyway. It seems I’m ahead of the game having the shirt ready for him. Quite a few don’t have a uniform and his ‘move up buddy’ is still wearing his cubs uniform. I picked his shirt up on eBay for half the price of the one from the Scout shop and it’s just as well because whilst there’s a bit of growing room, I have a feeling I’ll have to buy another as soon as H has a serious growth spurt. The trouble is that I will have to move all the badges all over again.
Some of H’s badges have moved up with him: this scout membership badge, his continuous service badge, his pack and district badges, plus his staged activity badges (the one with numbers on like musician or first aid). The remainder of the badges are destined for a camp blanket and I think I’m going to add his swimming badges to it. I am dreading all the sewing though. Does anyone know of a good way of glueing them on?
