Over the last few weeks I’ve been trying out the Lumie Bodyclock Iris 500. As most mums will tell you sleep is key and recently I’ve been able to get a bit more of it, which has been a bit of a novelty. I think H might finally be starting to sleep a little later (it’s only taken 8 and a half years). The idea behind the Lumie Bodyclock Iris is that it helps you wake up more naturally but it also help you to get to sleep easier too. Now until recently this wouldn’t have been much use to me due to wake up visits from H from 6am (even at weekends) and I usually go to sleep a matter of a few minutes after my head hits the pillow.
So how does the Lumie Bodyclock Iris work? Well it wakes you up gradually with light that mimics a real sunrise. The brightening light brings you more gently out of your sleep, prompting your body to reduce the production of sleep hormones such as melatonin, while increasing the levels of hormones like cortisol that helps you to get up and go. This should provide a great start to the day for sufferers of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and the winter blues, and helps anyone who is not naturally a morning person to feel brighter and more energetic first thing. It’s not just a nicer way to wake up. Waking to natural light resets your sleep/wake cycle and has been shown to boost your mood, productivity and energy levels throughout the day. Our physiological body clocks are aligned by sunrise and sunset. Most of us experience a mix of early starts, late nights, weekend lie-ins (well occasionally anyway) and sometimes travel disruption/time zone changes, so our internal sleep rhythms can be thrown into disarray. We feel tired and stressed trying to wake up for work or school. A dawn simulator device re-sets your body clock to run in time with your day, helping you feel more awake during the day and more ready for sleep at night.
The Lumie Bodyclock Iris lets you complement the light therapy with aromatherapy. Aromatherapy has been something that I discovered on my induction course when I started my first proper job as the course tutor was an enthusiast and I’ve been using aromotherapy oils ever since. The Lumie Iris lets you add your favourite aromatherapy oils to the two specialised chambers to create a nice fragrant and calming bedtime and an invigorating waking up experience. This is something I think I benefit more from in the morning than the evening as it can be difficult to get up sometimes even though I am a morning person. It’s nice to be able to relax in bed with some favourite oils though and that makes an early night a more pleasant experience.here’s good news for readers because I have a Lumie Bodyclock Iris to give away.
