Recently I was asked to give a beauty treatment a go, which was something a bit new to me: microneedle treatment. The way this works is that I used a microneedle skin roller with needles of 0.2mm in length. Obviously that is a very small needle size and you have to look closely at the roller to see the needles. To begin with I tried it on my hands to see how it would feel. I couldn’t really feel the needles on the tougher skin of my palm, just a tickly sensation. On the back of my hand I got a better idea and you feel lots of tiny pin pricks. It isn’t painful and whilst it’s a strange sensation, it’s more invigorating than unpleasant.
Swiss Clinic sent me 3 products to use together and try out: the skin roller, a cleaner for the roller and the rejuvenating serum. The cleaner is really easy to use – a quick spray after use is all that’s needed. The way you use them is that you spend a few minutes running the roller over your face and neck. The first time I did this I didn’t do this for more than about a minute and I could feel my skin for an hour or two afterwards. It wasn’t sore, but it was the sort of feeling you get after exfoliating your face. There was no lasting redness for me and the next morning when I woke all was back to normal. On subsequent uses that ‘exfoliated feeling’ hasn’t lasted much beyond the time I’ve been using the roller, even though I’ve used it for longer. It’s recommended that you do the treatment in the evening just in case your skin needs a little time to settle afterwards.
After the rolling you just apply the rejuvenating serum over your skin. It’s a very pleasant clear gel and there is no stinging after use, in fact I found it quite soothing. The idea is that the skin serum is formulated to promote cell renewal and to help restore skin functions. I’ve found the gel very pleasant to use, but it does The science behind using the roller is that the Skin Roller makes small micro-channels in the skin, causing the skin to respond as if it’s been damaged. This triggers the healing process and the production of collagen. These small micro-channels also help the skin to absorb large amounts of active ingredients from the subsequent Rejuvenating Serum treatment. In fact, up to 300% more than when the serum is applied without the roller. The active ingredients are able to penetrate deeply into the skin, strengthening the skin’s healing process and encouraging the formation of new, healthy skin.
Has it been effective? I’ve had a stressful few weeks with lots on my plate and I haven’t slept that well. I do think it has helped as every time I look in the mirror I am expecting to see bad news, but I think my skin has held its own because it’s had some extra help. I’m planning to continue using the skin roller and serum because I do think it is having benefits for my skin condition.
