As a child I first became aware of solar panels thanks to a packet of cereal. I’ve always been an avid reader and was only allowed to read the Corn Flakes packet at the breakfast table. I could easily recite the vitamin content of the ‘box of sunshine’, but it was much more exciting when there was a new offer to read about while I munched away. In 1978 Kelloggs Corn Flakes had a solar panel competition running on their boxes and with a quick google I’ve found a link to a pic of the packet. You had to list the benefits of solar panels to the consumer in order of importance ‘using your skill and judgement’.
Over the months that the competition was running, I considered this question every morning and entered the competition several times. Sadly I didn’t win and we didn’t get to be solar panel trailblazers. It did awaken an interest in all things green for me and for a number of years I was a regular contributor to the green shopping blog: The Green Familia.
