We got sent some Beano goodies to review. There can’t be that many parents and grandparents out there who don’t have some experience of the Beano from their childhood. In fact, The Beano is celebrating 75 years of menacing this year. Everyone seems to be familiar with the naughty Dennis the Menace with the wild, black hair and the stripey top with his sidekick and partner in crime, Gnasher. Children seem to love the naughtiness of it and the cartoons have always been great fun. There are a range of goodies that you can buy connected with The Beano and many of them make excellent presents. We tried out the traditional annual, a drinks bottle and a catapult toy.
The Annual has all the usual favourites in it: Minnie the Minx, Roger the Dodger, The Bash Street Kids and Billy Whizz. It’s a great way to introduce children to the world of The Beano and it should encourage even the most reluctant reader.
The Dennis and Gnasher Character Pult is a really fun toy. You hold the balls between Dennis’ hands, aim, pull back and release to fire. You can apparently soak the sponge balls in water too, but I haven’t suggested that idea to H. Sponge balls have limited damage potential round the house, but I think with water-soaked missiles, it would be a different matter. Might be fun outside in the summer though. There’s a target you can practise with on the back of the pack and it also gives you some ideas like setting up a shooting gallery.
