H loves Cubs: it’s one of the highlights of his week. Every so often they organise a badge night. now they are always doing badges at cubs, but this is a bit different. This special night for the badges that not everyone can do. They do things like their Entertainer badge or their Chef’s badge all together, but there are some topics that require specific skills or knowledge. Last time they did badge night H did his first stage of his musician badge. This time because he’s moved on and progressed with his cello playing during the year, he was able in do his second stage, in fact with luck and some work he would probably meet the requirements of the third stage soon. H is very critical of his own playing, but I watched a little video they did on the cubs’ Facebook page and it sounded pretty good to me. He was disappointed he couldn’t find the music he wanted to play (it was there, but hidden behind something else and he couldn’t find it at the time). He did very well though and achieved the necessary standard.
Before he went to Cubs that night H spent quite a bit of time sorting and organising his Pokemon cards collection, so he could try for his Collector’s badge. H has got a lot of cards, in fact a number of them have come from reviews on the blog, but others have been gained from presents or swapping with his cousins. Quite a lot of his cousins are into Pokemon, so card swapping is always popular when we get the family together. The collection looked really well presented by the time he had finished and he had no problem talking about his collection and explaining to other children. He’s like a Pokemon encyclopedia and he really knows his stuff.
I think in some ways I am prouder of him for achieving the Collector’s badge because that recognised skills and work on something that he does outside of school in his free time. He’s already put the work in for his cello and the musician badge just puts his skills through their paces, but the Collector’s badge tests out skills and knowledge that wouldn’t be examined elsewhere.
