Planning a family holiday involves spinning a lot of plates simultaneously. It is not quite as simple as buying your plane ticket and jetting off into the sunset. Once you’ve managed to save enough money and have worked around school term-times and the various other engagements your little ones rack up over the year to find the right dates you have to make the most important decision of all- Where to go?! Here are some of my tips for wonderful European locations where both the kids and mum and dad can have the time of their lives.
Sicily- One of the most magical places on our planet, Sicily is definitely a place to visit. Among its beautiful cultural sights, delicious food, and blue beaches, the Italian island will leave you craving a longer stay. Sicilian locals are incredibly accommodating and the life over there is very cheap so renting villas in Sicily is the perfect option to make your vacation that much better. A private villa allows you the freedom of visiting one place after the other on your own times; not to mention the usual home comforts that hotels often miss, plus a villa is just much larger than a hotel room and with kids a little extra space doesn’t hurt! If you’re looking for a destination that checks all your boxes, Sicily is perfect for you and your traveling partners!
Crete- Greece’s largest island, Crete is truly a unique destination. Not only does its crystal-clear sea contrast the green mountains behind you, but also thanks to the Greek’s friendly nature, you’ll be feeling right at home. Along with the many relaxing days ahead of you, know that if you’re up for some adventure during the day, Crete has lots of different activities available. Whether that be hiking, visiting Crete’s pink sand beaches, or going for a night out in Heraklion, you and your family will not be disappointed!
Alicante, Spain- Taking a trip to Spain’s hidden treasure that is Alicante, will have you reminiscing about your time spent there for a long time. Located in the Spanish coast, Alicante boasts a great nightlife, adventurous activities, and a relaxing time as well. With the old town right at the bottom of the medieval Castillo de Santa Bárbara castle, Alicante will keep you taking pictures throughout your stay. Versatile and easy-going, this Spanish city is right on the water, and offers its visitors a truly exceptional time.
Serra da Estrela, Portugal- If you’re looking for a holiday destination that offers you a mountain landscape, and infinite green scenery around you, Portugal’s Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela is the place for you. One of the first Portuguese parks, this holiday destination is a great time for every season. Whether you decide to take up your skis, or your trekking shoes, the Parque will leave you breathless.
Croatia- With an incredible wine selection, breath-taking views that include both beaches and natural scenery, and a nightlife that is like no other, Croatia is for sure a good time. With the summer season being the best time to visit Croatia, its beach parties are memorable. Nonetheless, when you’re tired of the beach, you can keep busy by visiting the many historical sights, visiting one island after the other, or simply enjoying a happy hour on a Croatian side street.
Remember that a family holiday is not only for the kids but the parents too, make sure you have time to relax and enjoy the break for yourself, many resorts have kids clubs allowing parents some much needed time to have a break.
