Last Saturday I had to drag H away from his cousins for a few hours to go to an 11+ mock exam. He sits the real thing next month and this was a last chance to practice under exam conditions. I set out quite early because it was across the city (about half an hour drive), but I didn’t want to be stressing if we were late. Just as well as halfway there, the heavens opened and hail came down. It made a right racket on the car and then I got to the main road through the part of the city we were going to and the road had flashflooded. Luckily I was in the right hand lane because I knew I had to turn somewhere ahead, but it was a bit hairy. By the time we arrived the sun was out and it was a different day.
Sunday was the day of the christening. My brother’s baby boy was been christened. All the children were really well-behaved in the church, especially given they were mostly sitting together without any adults that close. Then there was a party afterwards. As ever my brother threw himself into the children’s games and I think he wore himself out. There was musical statues, musical chairs and pinatas. Then most of the children came back to our house to play a little longer. Mayhem, but fun.
On Monday my sister and her kids left and everything seemed quiet again. I got on with putting things back into place and got H to take some pictures of me cleaning for a review of a spray mop I was doing.
On Tuesday H went to Berlin for a short holiday with his Dad and everything seemed very quiet without him. Luckily I had a night out planned in the evening visiting The Canal House. We went on a narrow boat trip which included a beer tasting and then a full meal with drinks at The Canal House, which is opening on Monday. I could take 3 friends with me too, so it was a very pleasant night out.
I have spent this week doing a mix of things. There has been a lot of washing to do with extra bedding being in use while my sister’s family were here. I also took the opportunity of H being away to wash some of things I clean less often because they take quite a lot of drying.
I caught up with some of my blogging work, although I still have a lot to do. I tend to spend most of the holidays juggling priorities whilst spending as much time as possible with H.
Gardening was another big part of the week. I have been putting off cutting the hedges until 1st August – apparently you are supposed to wait till then just in case there are nesting birds. Then August came and it never seemed to stop raining for long enough for the hedge to dry. Then it was family celebration time and I had no free time. So this week was the first chance. I am doing a bit of a gardening project at the moment for one of my blogs and I took this before picture for that. The driveway looks a bit neglected and I think I don’t always notice so much when the car is there, but it does need some work. I spent an hour cutting the hedges and applying weedkiller, so we shall see how it looks once that’s had a chance to work.
More blogging project work this week. I took this shot for a piece I’ll be writing next week.
