So I’d hoped to do a fair amount of gardening at the weekend, but the weather wasn’t really playing along. I did manage a few bits, but I didn’t really get much done. Not really sure what I did instead though as lots of jobs remain undone around the house too. I’ve had my first home grown tomatoes of the year though.
This year’s big success in the garden was the fruit really. The blackcurrants took ages to harvest, but we have loads in the freezer now. Looks like we will have more than one apple this year too. Even the autumn fruiting raspberries are starting to come good – seems a bit early.
We haven’t bought cucumbers for a few weeks now and we have a good supply in the greenhouse. I’ve even had a surplus for my mother.
Another surprise success this year was my first successful sweet pea planting. I have been trying to grow sweet peas for years. The gardening books all seem to say they are easy. It just hasn’t worked. I bought some seeds at a poundshop and grew them. I got some seedlings, but only one has actually flowered, but it is doing really well. It’s supposed to be a perennial sweet pea, so I am hoping it will be around next year too.
A little less successful though were my brassicas. I had these netted to avoid birds and butterflies. I suspected it hadn’t been effective the other week when I had to ‘rescue’ a butterfly from inside the netting and now I have very little foliage on my kohl rabi thanks to these colourful creatures.
We had a quiet week mostly at home with occasional trips out to the dentist (to have a preventive treatment applied to H’s teeth), the shops (for food) and libraries for books. One day H read 5 books. H has been a bit under the weather and I’ve been trying to get him right again by having a few easy days at home.
The end of the week saw everything change when the Hughes clan started to congregate for my nephew’s christening this weekend. We went out for a family meal at a country pub and then onto a park nearby for some fun.
